“Zamek budzi się obok słońca i śpi obok księżyca, mimo to ich nie rozumie.”

  • I was tasked with creating artwork for the Oakland University Art Gallery. I had to create work that conveyed a message to a broad audience. My piece also had to display my skillset as a graphic designer.
  • I am very inspired by art that can convey a message without needing text to describe what is going on. I wanted to be able to display my design skill, and have been expirimenting with a typographic style that is led by emotion rather than being legible. I have also always wanted to learn oil painting so I taught myself how to oil paint using tutorials online and painted two things: a fish and a surrealist landscape. Combining all three of these ideas, I came up with a scenario about how I have never fully been able to understand my grandparents because they speak Polish as their first language, but I have always been surrounded by them. It was what I called "Alienated Familiarity".
  • I came up with a scene about a castle that always saw the sun and moon, yet did not understand them. I used that as a metaphor: relating the sun and moon to my grandparents and the castle to myself. The yellow illegible typeface on the frame says "Sun", "Moon", and “Zamek budzi się obok słońca i śpi obok księżyca, mimo to ich nie rozumie.”. These are all created using a typeface I came up with that is illegible yet is led by emotion. I wanted people to view my artwork and feel something without telling them directly what was going on. I accomplished everything I wanted to and am incredibly proud of the work I displayed at the Oakland University Art Gallery.
